Mainstream Inclusion: Why This Focus Could Be a Positive Step

The white paper places strong emphasis on inclusive mainstream education. That may raise concerns for parents whose children have struggled in mainstream settings.

It is important to understand what “inclusive mainstream” is intended to mean.

This is not about placing children without support. It is about increasing:

• specialist expertise within mainstream schools

• access to external professionals

• consistent support frameworks

• early identification

There is also significant investment proposed to improve inclusion capacity within schools. If implemented properly, this could reduce the reliance on crisis intervention and long waits for assessment.

For many children, earlier and more consistent support at SEN Support level could prevent escalation of needs.

That said, inclusion must be meaningful. A placement is only suitable if it is meeting need. Specialist provision will continue to exist for those who require it.

The most constructive approach for parents right now is:

• stay informed

• engage with consultation updates

• maintain open communication with your child’s school

• focus on your child’s individual needs rather than system headlines

Reform can feel unsettling. But it can also be an opportunity to correct weaknesses that families have long identified.

The coming months will bring more clarity. In the meantime, the fundamentals remain unchanged: children with SEND are entitled to appropriate support, and schools remain under a duty to use their best endeavours to secure it.
