Understanding the Graduated Approach to SEND
The Graduated Approach is the UK’s structured method for identifying and supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). It follows a four-step cycle: Assess, Plan, Do, Review.
Schools begin by assessing a child’s needs using observations, data, and input from parents, the child, and specialists. Next, they plan tailored support and set clear outcomes. The “Do” phase involves putting this support into action, often led by the class teacher with help from the SENCO and other staff. Finally, progress is reviewed and adjustments are made as needed—then the cycle begins again.
This ongoing, flexible process ensures that support is closely matched to each child’s evolving needs. It encourages collaboration between families and professionals and promotes early intervention.
For children whose needs are more complex or long-term, the Graduated Approach may lead to an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)—a legal document that details the extra help a child requires across education, health, and social care.
Ultimately, the Graduated Approach helps ensure no child is left behind. It supports inclusive, responsive education that allows every learner to achieve their potential. If you require support with your child's school and getting the help you need please contact Jenny at JLFH SEN support
